About Us

The Pittsburgh Musicians' Union (PMU) is an organization of over 750 professional musicians. For more than 100 years, the PMU has been working to achieve dignity and just wages for our art. Our members include the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Orchestra, the River City Brass Band and the orchestras for Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and many other performing arts groups. We represent musicians performing all styles of music: alternative rock, soul, classical, jazz, rock, country, pop, reggae, Christian rock, and others. Also musicians active in recording commercials, television and radio programs and CD's, and musicians performing at private and corporate parties locally and throughout North America.

As a part of the American Federation of Musicians (our national organization) with 100,000 members nationwide, our members are connected and informed of matters of importance to musicians. Legislative issues, job vacancies, health and welfare concerns are addressed and discussed in publications and online, in forums available to members.

Who We Are

The Pittsburgh Musicians' Union is a Labor Union representing nearly 800 professional musicians performing in Western Pennsylvania and across North America. We pursue fair wages and economic security for musicians, through collective bargaining agreements, wage scales, legal representation for disputes involving filed PMU contracts, affordable instrument and liability insurance and our pension fund.

The musicians of the Pittsburgh Musicians' Union play classical music, jazz, rock, latin, reggae and more. Within the membership, you can find musicians who will play any style of music and perform that music to the highest professional standards. We work in the region's professional orchestras and the theater pits accompanying Broadway productions. We work in clubs, at cooperate and private events, at conventions and anywhere that music is needed.
